Oct. 30, #FollowFriday

Oct 30 2009 Published by under FollowFriday, Twitter

This week’s post is a continuation of last week’s #FollowFriday post, as I only touched the surface on the friends, new and old, whom I met in person for the first time at Blog World Expo in Vegas a couple of weeks ago.

Last week I concentrated on people I’ve known the longest but never met (with one exception). This week will be a mix of people I’ve known for a little while and brand-new folks. All are cool peeps I’m glad to know now.

@DanielHonigman: Dan Honigman is one of those people who I’ve known for what seems like forEVer. He was on Digg, he helped create Col. Tribune when he was at the Chicago Tribune, he went to my alma mater (the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University), we know lots of the same people between social media and the real world of newspaper journalism (dying a very inelegant death at the moment). We’ve talked on the phone, exchanged IMs, e-mails, discussed career choices. Never met in person until BWE. Funny story – I was live-tweeting, saw a tweet from him, so I DM’d him, asking if he was in the same room as I was. Sure enough, he was, but on the opposite end of a very large room. A couple minutes later, I notice another DM from him, asking if I was wearing a red shirt (I was, but not in the Star Trek sense). I responded affirmatively. Shortly after, another DM, “Turn around.” And there, sitting behind me, was Dan the all-around man. And there you have it.

@Jaybol: Anyone who’s been on Digg for more than five minutes know Jason Lankow, even if they don’t know they know him. Using the moniker Jaybol, Jason has racked up an impressive 1,200+ front page submissions on Digg and has a pretty freaky avatar. Turns out, that’s a Halloween costume from a couple years ago. The real Jason is not scary at all and he’s about to become a daddy! His wife just finished up her first trimester and I gleefully explained how his social life as he knows it is about to come to an end. I think I addicted him to craps for life, however. Ah, well, a few losing rounds should cure him of that.

@MadLid: What a trip to meet Lidija Davis in person. Unfortunately, our stays in Vegas didn’t overlap very long, so we didn’t have much time to hang out. She’s a tech journalist — or, as her Twitter profile says, “information nut.” She holds her own with the boys of The Drill Down very nicely (see last week’s FF for her cohorts, MrBabyMan, MSaleem and 0boy) and is ever so very Australian.

@Joshua_Ritchie: Another one of my craps buddies, I had never met Joshua online, or off, before Blog World. I had run across his work before, however, as he’s a writer for Mint.com and his firm, Column Five Media, does some wicked cool infographics. He and Jaybol stayed up for hours after we finished winning at craps, telling everyone about how much fun it is to play craps. I reminded them that there is a reason it is called a “crapshoot.” Sometimes you win, and sometimes … you don’t.

@Techspian: His username is like thespian, an actor, but has “tech” instead, so it’s like he’s a performer with tech, get it? James Tamplin is part of the team behind Envolve.com, which is a really nifty commenting tool. It’s in private beta, but he gave me and a few of my buddies the first-ever look at it, and it could be the Next Big Thing. Or, at the very least, a very healthy medium-sized thing. Seriously, though, it’s a cool way of interacting on a site. And besides that, he’s a helluva nice guy and didn’t hold it against us when he lost at craps.

@ArjunSingh: You know how every now and again you meet someone who becomes your friend right away? Arjun hung out with us at the Chicago Now party at the Hilton and laughed at all my jokes. I knew I liked him. Before long, we were chatting away as if we’d been fast friends for a long time and he joined a group of us for dinner. Sure, that’s what you’re supposed to do at networking events, I suppose, but how often do you actually WANT to? Anyhow, he’s a do-gooder and is involved in citizen journalism way up in the wilds in Kamloops, British Columbia. (Say Kamloops out loud a few times, it’ll cheer you up, I guarantee it.)

Anyhow, that’s it for this week – five more cool folk from Blog World Expo. I have a few more people I’d like to introduce you to, plus some quick mentions of other folks I’ve #FF’d before, but I got to actually meet at BWE.

Oct. 23, #FollowFriday

I had the good fortune last week of attending the Blog World Expo in Vegas and finally got to meet a whole helluva lot of people I’ve “known” for a while online IN REAL LIFE.

I suppose I should say IRL, in the spirit of this being a blog and Twitter-related and all, but when it’s people who you’ve been talking to online for upwards of two and a half years, well, spelling it all out seems to be the right thing to do.

So I thought I’d do a #FollowFriday post on the cool folks I finally met. I’ll probably do this for a couple of weeks, as I met up with a ton of people and also met some brand-new people who I’d love to share with the world. I’m not going to do a whole explainer on folks who I’ve already #FollowFriday’d, but will mention them.

As usual, please leave your suggestions for other people you think I should follow, in the comments section.

So, without further chit-chat, here are some way cool people whose Twitter streams you should check out:

RichBecker: Of all the people I met last week, I’ve known Richard the longest. Back about two and a half years ago, a little television show called Jericho was canceled by CBS. Both of us were fans and both of us were bloggers and we both ended up writing about it. I was covering the show for a TV blog and he mostly wrote about it from a marketing/public relations standpoint in terms of how CBS handled the whole thing and the ways the fans were pushing for a renewal. I was still a journalist and Rich was a former journalist, so we naturally gravitated to one another. We’ve kept in touch ever since and occasionally exchange e-mails or Facebook or Twitter comments. Well, Rich lives in Vegas AND works with Blog Catalog’s Bloggers Unite campaign. So he was there, helping at BC’s exhibitors table. Rich is a great guy and knows what he’s talking about. His blog is good reading and he’s a helluva nice guy to boot.

JBoitnott: John Boitnott is a little different, because I’ve actually met him before, when he was in NYC at the 140C (Twitter’s 140 Character Conference) earlier this year. We’re both old-school journos who saw the future and it was social media. He’s now the social media strategist for Village Voice Media, which means he helps some of the coolest alternative weekly newspapers in the nation figure out how to be as social-media friendly as they can be. John is one of the hardest working people I know and he is also a barrel of fun. I love hanging out with him and he’s got a wicked sense of humor.

0boy: I’ve crossed paths with JD Rucker for quite some time on Digg, Twitter and other social sites, but only got to know him very recently. He’s such a dad and the first night we were there, he carted around a car full of losers (myself included) to the Strip and back to our hotels again. In fact, on the way to the Strip, the car was so full that I felt as if I were back in high school. And though we were in Vegas, where the drinks are free half the time, not a peep of a complaint from JD about carting around people who couldn’t be bothered to take a cab or the monorail. Such a dad. He also caught video of me, MrBabyMan and BridgetAyers dancing in a dark dance club. So if I don’t want that to ever see the light of day, I am obligated to tell you all what a wonderful human being he is. Really.

MrBabyMan: Andrew Scorcini is alternately the most love and the most hated man on Digg. That comes with being the top submitter of content ever on the top social bookmarking site. A film editor by trade, Andy has an eye for some of the best content on the internet. It’s kinda scary. But he’s fun to talk to and hang with and, yes, dance with.

MSaleem: If you haven’t heard of Muhammed Saleem, you’re not paying attention. I’ve known Mu for a while through his Digging, his Tweeting, his Stumbling, his work on various sites including Tip’d and all that sorta stuff. But what you don’t know about Mu is that his hair is WAY longer than it is in his profile pictures. I almost didn’t recognize him when I finally met him in person. He was among the boys who had the good taste to play craps with me. In fact, when I was desperately trying to get the guys to gamble, Mu was the first to agree and to help me seek out a craps table. P.S. He’s glad he did. All of us won. True story.

GVoakes: Greg Voakes is the brains behind Ultimate Goat Fansite and is Canadian. He also looks remarkably like Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, though I’m not sure if he was even born yet when that movie came out. Yes, he is that young. He’s old enough to gamble, though, and he was among the winners at our craps table. And because of his website, everytime I see a picture of a goat or someone says the word goat, I think of him. I’m not sure if that’s good or not, but I choose to believe it’s good.

OK, that’s the first six, but I have another five or six for next week’s #FollowFriday and perhaps another group for a third. I feel as if I should make up for last week’s lack of #FollowFriday, but I’m behind enough as it is and just want to get this posted already!

Thanks for playing along, and please leave your recommendations in the comments.

I had the good fortune of going to Bruce Springsteen’s second-to-last concert at Giants Stadium last night, thanks to a friend with an extra ticket. We had great seats, and I posted photos from each song to my Posterous – as well as a few extra pics.

My Posterous tweets all new posts, so I ended up having some cool conversations with other fans before, during and after the concert, so I thought I’d suggest some folks for today’s Follow Friday whom I’ve been talking to on Twitter – some for a few weeks now, some I just “met” last night.

As always, please make any suggestions for other people to follow in the comments.

@hypenoticbam: I have to start with Barry Martin, because it turns out that Springsteen was playing over the loudspeakers in the hospital when both his first and second children were born. And he lives in Canada, not New Jersey. Thunder Road was playing when he was there for his first daughter’s birth, and 10th Avenue Freeze-Out when his second was. Needless to say, he’s a big fan.

@Kcecelia: Katherine James and I have been conversing on Twitter for a few weeks now, and I’m please to say that I have her looking at bacon in a whole new light. She’s fun to talk to and very cool. She likes Bruce, but much like me (and many, many others), Clarence Clemons is her favorite. He was awesome and got huge cheers every time he was shown on the big screens, by the way.

@paulzink: Paul Zink and I have been chatting on and off a lot, and after I tweeted out a photo of me and my friend Laura last night, he sent me a link to a photo of a friend of his, who looks remarkably like me. Surreal. Paul tweets about all kinds of stuff and is always up for a conversation.

@laurenhard: This was Lauren Hard’s first Bruce concert (was only my second) and she now understands how people can get obsessed. It’s true, the man plays 3 hours, NON-stop. Lauren’s a Philadelphia blogger/journalist and I just “met” her last night. Caution: If you dislike the Phillies, you might not want to follow her.

@stephensurefire: Stephen lives in Austin, Texas, where they know a bit about good music. Plus, he’s a music business manager, so he tweets a bit about music and musicians. He expressed jealousy at my going to the concert, but he’s going to see Bruce in November, so it’s all good.

That’s it for this week.
